I was looking outside a window, down into our chicken coop, which at the moment has no chickens! The chicken coop is covered with wire mesh, and there is a large door that we can easily walk in and out of when we gather the eggs. We haven’t had chickens the last while (maybe in the spring), and the door is always open to the coop because we still pick the weeds out, etc.
What caught my attention was the two sparrows who were flying around and around in the coop, clearly wanting out. If they had paused and looked, they would have seen the large, open door, which also has easy-to-see-through mesh. After about five minutes, I went in and shooed them through the door, then shut it, hoping they and other little birds wouldn’t try to work their way back in!
When this was done, I kept thinking about how the birds had a way out, but they were so caught up in looking at all the blocks in their way that they couldn’t see it! Sometimes I think we are the same. We are caught up in a behavior, a marriage or a job that is fairly destructive, and we don’t seem to see the door that can create change for us. So when we are constantly caught in a situation that is consistently causing us unhappiness, one of the first steps is to ask ourselves “why?”
Why do we stay in the situations that continuously make us unhappy? One of the main reasons is fear of change. In my next writing, I will discuss the fear of change. While you are waiting, start writing down what is making you so unhappy and your reasons for not doing anything about it.
