I’ve seen some miracles this summer and in particular one made me think about the power of a group, both for good or ill. It is hard to be at one with another. Friends struggle, families struggle, couples struggle and society as a whole usually stumbles most of the time. What creates at-one-ness?
Usually there has to be an overwhelming conscious group agreement where each person wants the same particular thing to happen. We have seen it both positively and negatively in the history of this country. Perhaps we have seen it happen in our neighborhoods in times of trouble. We have seen it in our churches and schools.
Then there is the miracle. We have very private miracles, but occasionally we have one that is very public and that is the type I am sharing with you today. In our family, we had a granddaughter that had a serious accident on a four-wheeler and it involved head trauma. She was put on an emergency flight to Las Vegas and placed in pediatric intensive care. She was on total life support and we weren’t sure what would happen. It was horrifying to see her in the condition she was in.
Than a call was put out on Facebook, over the pulpits of different denominations of churches, and several different states. There were families in areas throughout California, Nevada and Utah who joined in prayers. It became an intense one heart, one mind prayer.
Several days passed by and not much changed. Then came a rapid up-hill climb – from a ventilator to breathing on her own. From being unable to walk to walking with a limp. From walking with a limp to no limp at all. Then came the day when the whole family was eating pizza with her in a waiting room.
She was expected to spend several weeks in a rehabilitation home. Instead she left in three days. Her doctor, who was the in-take neurologist at UMC, saw her at this point and released her. He was from India and he looked at the Mom and said “this is what you all call a miracle.” Yes it was.
Why?
I truly believe that it is because we came together to be of one heart and one mind. I realize that it doesn’t always turn out perfectly, and God’s will is always involved, but there is a power to prayer in a group that we underestimate. There are too many examples.
I’ve wondered what it will take for us to become as “one”. It would change our families, our communities and our nation. Christ has asked us to become as one in him: one heart and one mind in Christ. Perhaps we should give this some thought!
